In this lesson, we will learn how to write an informal letter in German. Informal letters are written in a casual way generally to a friend or someone in the family.
First of all , we will learn some words, which we should know before writing a letter.

Let’s understand this topic through a real world example –
We will take the example of a birthday invitation. We will discuss how to send an invitation , what will the person reply if he accepts the invitation and the reply if he could not accept the invitation due to some reason. Let’s begin:
We divide the letter in 3 parts :
- Anrede (Salutation): Salutation for masculine and feminine are different in German, let’s learn:

- Textteil (Body of the letter): The Textteil can contain following points:
Ich habe am 10. Januar Geburtstag.
Ich lade dich/euch ein.
Die Party ist bei mir zu Hause./ Die Party findet im Hotel Atlantis statt.
Die Party beginnt um 18 Uhr./ Die Party fängt um 18 Uhr ab.
Kannst du einen Kuchen,(einen Salat oder eine Flasche Cola) mitbringen? (Sometimes you can ask a person to bring something along if Party is at home)
Höffentlich hast du Zeit.
- Unterschrift (Closing) :

Reply to invitation: Reply of the invitation is based on whether the person has accepted the invitation or he could not accept due to some reason. We will discuss both of them in detail.
If the person has accepted the invitation (zusagen): It contains the following points:
Vielen Dank für die Einladung./ Ich danke für die Einladung zum Geburtstag.
Ich komme sehr gern.
Wann und wo findet die Party statt? (we write this only if the details are not mentioned in the invitation.)
Kann ich etwas mitbringen?
Ich bringe gerne einen Salat mit.
Darf ich mein Freund/ meine Freundin mitnehemn?/ Kann mein Freund/meine Freundin mitkommen?

There is another probability if you are accepting the invitation but will go a little late, then you can say:
Ich komme gern aber 2 Studen später. Ich muss meine Mutter vom Bahnhof abholen.
If the person rejects the invitation (absagen) : It contains the following points:
Vielen dank für die Einladung.
Es tutmir leid, aber ich kann nicht kommen. / Leider kann ich nicht zum Geburtstag kommen.
Ich habe eine Prüfung und ich muss studieren./ Ich muss arbeiten und habe keine Zeit./ Ich bin am 10. Januar im Ausland.
Ich wünsche dir viel spaβ! Höffentlich sehen wir uns bald./ Wir treffen uns bald.
